laboratory sample

The first sample of a product that represents the basic functions is a laboratory sample. In this phase, the device has little to do with the planned appearance, dimensions and future electronics. The basic function, whether mechanical or electrical can be adapted, changed and modified on the device.

 

This approach is particularly important in order not to encounter any surprises in the following development steps that lead to unnecessary development loops and take up time and money.

 

 

design sample

A design sample is a prototype with no specific functions. The interpretation of the scope of a design sample is based on the hoped-for gain in knowledge. In most cases, the shape, color, surface texture, feel and ergonomics are checked on the basis of the design sample. In some cases, weight also plays a decisive role. The materials used can differ from the planned product and are usually rapid prototyping and milled parts. Depending on the product, a design sample can only deal with certain elements of a device, for example to depict a handle or a "handheld". Especially when it comes to the interaction between man and machine, various PU foam samples are made in this phase to check ergonomics.

The functional prototype is indispensable in product development. Essentially, the dimensions and function of the planned device are simulated. Functional and structural elements must be supported in order to be able to check the planned functionality. The knowledge gained on the basis of this prototype is the basis for the series-ready construction.

The design is strongly stylized depending on the product, but can have form-giving elements as well as design elements that are significantly associated with the function. In some cases it may be advisable to include the planned design if the planned device is to be used for promotional purposes.

The classic prototype comes very close to the final product. Functions, materials and construction correspond to the planned series. Rapid prototyping, milled parts and auxiliary tools are used as much as possible for production. The product is a near-series product that combines design, technology and function before investing in tools for production.

At this point, it is still possible to rework without incurring major costs. This type of prototype is also suitable as a template for your production facility. Based on the technical prototype, all details for the pre-series can be discussed.

The pre-series is again differentiated into pilot and zero series. In both cases, tools are sometimes used that are also used for production. You should take this step with your manufacturer. In the pilot series, there is usually still reworking, whereas in the pilot series there is only limited potential for making changes. However, we can offer you to take this step towards series production together with you and oversee the processes and communication.
